This week's edition covers Electric Forest, once known as
Rothbury. The experience I had there just last summer still remains vivid in my
mind. I can still remember hearing the echoes of the name "Carl"
called out throughout the festival. Back in 2008 during the first Rothbury, campers
who had lost their friend Carl were calling out his name and the name ended up becoming
the festival's legacy. Now when the name is called out it becomes the
festivals' joke that unites all campers together.
The Atmosphere
Electric Forest is unlike any other festival in the sense
that they have their very own fluorescent forest called Sherwood Forest. The
Forest comes alive at night with hammocks, hanging art and live performers. Besides
the forest, if you and your friends ever need a break from the music scene
there is the Big Wildcat Lake. The lake is always a great place to wash off the
show from the night before. Another hot spot is the (Glow in the dark) disc
golf along with other unique features of the festival.
This year Electric Forest will be lighting up Rothbury,
Michigan from June 28-July 1. The headliners include Bassnectar, STS9 and of
course The String Cheese Incident. STS9's light show, Bassnectar's beats and the crowd's
favorite String Cheese will guarantee a memorable weekend.
Crowd Pleaser: Nectar
Bassnectar has never ceased to surprise his audience with
new beats and collaborations, his claim to fame being his 'womps.' His newest album "Vava Voom," released April 10th, will once again open new
doors for dubstep music. The new single "Vava Voom" featuring Lupe
Fiasco, creates a collision of dub with hip-hop. In my opinion, the song reminds
me of a deserted carnival that I never want to leave. According to Rolling
Stone, "Vava Voom" is where life shifts into time-warp speed, but you
find yourself in an almost slow-motion trance," Bassnectar said.

Next Issue: Summer Camp
The next edition will preview Summer Camp Music Festival in
Chillicothe, Illinois from May 25-27. The festival has been around since 2001
and continues to create an environment welcoming a wide range of genres from
jam bands to dubstep to hip-hop. The festival even has their own term for attendees
- "scampers." The festival has featured previous artists like Girl
Talk, Moe, Umphrey's McGee, Wiz Khalifa and Slightly Stoopid- that leaves me to
ask who wouldn't want to be a scamper?
